Such an easy Morning Glory to deal with. It seeds about and does not seem to be adulterated by any other sorts I have had over the years. 'Knowlian's Black' is growing on the unused shower shut off under the house. I will try to collect the seeds, but if I fail, it will probably not be lost, here. It has also started to bloom in the plastic window boxes on the pool deck. 


Often over by the scraps of food and parings from meals, over by the barn, this is probably the Groundhog or Woodchuck that ate the leaves off the Spaghetti Squash. I was blaming Deer. I am using the repellent spray, and maybe that will work.  I hope the Parrots Feather pond plant will overwinter. They looked pathetic when they arrived from a ebay seller, but one pays for genetic potential, and they are gaining. Spent a few minute watching, and at least 2 Guppies are alive, to eat mosquitoes.


Two trail cameras are taking still shots. The one that takes videos takes one too long for this blog system. A number of Deer are around every night. Fending them off from valued plants with spray repellent and a wire fence around some vegetables. 



The Chaste Tree is blooming. Vitex agnus-castus is, I think, the proper name. Once again it is annoying that anyone would call these flowers blue. They are violet colored.  Odorless, but swarming with all sorts of pollinating insects. Parts of the plant are supposed to have effects on female hormones and people do use them, but the real value is not proven, although traditional.


Named for a comedy character on Grand Old Oprey, Minnie Pearl, this Phlox is smaller than most of its species and white colored. Phlox paniculata, and a grand, old fashioned, long lived choice. 


Of course I would pick a white selection of Physiostygia virginica, the Obedient Plant. Normally a nice pink, the plant stem can be bent and stay like that in a vase. A dependable native, but invasive under normal circumstances. 'Miss Manners' seems to be a clone less likely to spread.

Always the classic Morning Glory, and dependably late in showing up, here. Perhaps earlier blooming strains exist. But here we have the typically late show from 'Heavenly Blue'. And, as I have said many times, the other sorts here form seed for me. Never this sort.   Colchicum 'Waterlily' was growing at the front of the house until a new water line had to be installed. It was lost, somehow, then. Efforts being made to re-establish it have not worked, while the plant is perfectly hardy in this zone. Here we try again. Three bulbs were potted up in this pot, and the more expensive and rarer white flowered sort was put in another pot. Two of these have bloomed and the white sort totally failed. I informed the supplier, and expect no response, not having reciepts to show. And the bulbs are hard to find on the market. After blooming, these two will be moved where they might grow.  In the shade of the Holly tree, as we leave the house for the vehicles, this Aster is blooming ...

Bogturtle's Garden- February 2024

 Traditionally, I have used February to post the assortment of evergreen plants on the property.  Same old, but I hate to post old pictures from other years. And the same colorful plants, with flowers now, or colored bark, will be included, as if I did not show them recently. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, the wildlife, here, is usually recorded on videos between 10 and 20 seconds long. To my knowledge, I still cannot post such long videos on this site.  Taken through a window on 2/1 and a sunny day, which have not come often, recently. Most notable are the green stems of the Kerria japonica 'plena' and the berries on the American Holly.  Annoyingly, the camera had to be set on red emphasizing 'sunset' mode, to show off the berries better, and then the green of the Kerria stems is harder to see. We have seen the waves of Robins that always Winter here, and the berries on the Winterberry bushes are already gone, but most of the American Holly berries are still here. ...

Sold everywhere, this time of year, and one pot was planted at the base of the Sourgum Tree by the front walk. Just keeps getting better and better. The dwarf called 'Tete a Tete'.                                                                                                            Half inch wide flowers on what is often called the 'white forsythia'. Abeliophylum distichum, a Korean native, but reported to be rare, there. At any rate, my bush is sparse, getting quite a bit of shade, and tinted pink, which frequently happens with cooler weather.
