Bogturtle's Garden- July 21 to end, 2022

Strangely named the Tiger Lily, since it has spots, this 6 foot tall plant is an old fashioned item, passed from gardener to gardener. Apparently two proper or Scientific names are given to this same plant, Lilium lancifolium or L. tigrinum. Most interesting to me is the small bulbils that form in the axils of the leaves, that make propagation so super easy. But, of course, you would have to wait a year or more for the plant to get to blooming size, so the regular root bulbs are so much faster.  A pleasant little golden yellow Crocosmia, half the size of C. 'Diablo'. Lost the varietal name, but do wonder why the rare plant nursery made this a choice to sell. Perhaps rare, but also unlikely to stop traffic, as 'Diablo' might. This Cleome is specifically called 'Helen Campbells Snow Crown'.   I choose the white, but Cleome can shade to pale pink to quite dark pink. Almost the color I call magenta.  Repeating myself, a visiting proper lady saw a small one, and I

Such an easy Morning Glory to deal with. It seeds about and does not seem to be adulterated by any other sorts I have had over the years. 'Knowlian's Black' is growing on the unused shower shut off under the house. I will try to collect the seeds, but if I fail, it will probably not be lost, here. It has also started to bloom in the plastic window boxes on the pool deck.  Often over by the scraps of food and parings from meals, over by the barn, this is probably the Groundhog or Woodchuck that ate the leaves off the Spaghetti Squash. I was blaming Deer. I am using the repellent spray, and maybe that will work.  I hope the Parrots Feather pond plant will overwinter. They looked pathetic when they arrived from a ebay seller, but one pays for genetic potential, and they are gaining. Spent a few minute watching, and at least 2 Guppies are alive, to eat mosquitoes. Two trail cameras are taking still shots. The one that takes videos takes one too long for this blog system. A numb

The Japanese Stewartia spilling the day old spent flowers, but I have never seen more than this year. Framed by the middle of the set of windows.  The Red Knockout Roses were not pruned. They bloomed heavily, and as those flowers faded, new stems came up and bloomed heavily. There is also some new reddish growth all over. Plan is to prune them down, in Fall to about 18 inches. Never did that before.   Azalea 'Weston's Lemon Drop' is almost buried in the one side of the circle nearest where we park. A deciduous shrub. Actually surprised that it blooms so late, as I never thought about it. A nice smell, and the shrub may take on a little color before the leaves drop for Winter.  The white flowers are Hydrangea quercifolia 'Snow Queen', and at their best now.  The earlier blooming clone of the Buckeye, Aesculus parviflora.  The species name 'parviflora' relates to the small flowers, but they are carried in significant candles over a foot long. Quite poisonous
