Growing on the Red Cedar Tree that is where we park, Lonicera 'Mandarin' looks better and better each year.

Geranium sanguinium 'Alba' is shown again below. 


I found out this Streptocarpus is named, for some strange reason, 'Siberia'. But the flowers do look just like the dark violet velvet.


Here for many years, with no real increase, the unusual blue-green clone of the Southern native, Zenobia pulverulenta, is showing its little urn shaped flowers. Showing they are part of the Heath family.



Oenothera tetragona, I think. And Evening Primrose that shows 4 parts in the middle of the flower. You are likely to always have this fine plant, if you plant it. I have to thin it, to control it.

Looking wonderful. Red Knockout Roses were cut to about a foot from the ground, and are coming back wonderfully. 

Not problem free, apparently, the one to the far end is beset with thrips, that hide under the leaves and eat, leaving only the top layer of a leaf behind. Which turns brown. I am using insecticide and it may help.

Pratia peduncularis, the Blue Star Creeper, again.

Two female Ilex verticellata are loaded with berries, and, unfortunately, the Robins that will move down from Canada and Northern States will get them all. The berries will not decorate bare branches for Christmas. Both shrubs are named clones of the Winterberry Holly. The red is a dwarfer clone called I. v. 'Sprite' and the yellow I.v. 'Harvest Gold'. I think the necessary male, that provides the pollen, is in the corner of the house, nearby. This silver leaved clone of the Cyclamen hederaceae should show its white flowers in Spring and be evergreen. Only one of several that were here among the Violets in the lens shaped Rose bed just outside this additions windows. Some plants are particular regarding soil pH and some don't seem to care. But finding out which really are fussy is not always easy. This soil is usually acid, so that might be why the other two Cyclamen corms did not survive.                                    The Deer found nothing of interest in the leftovers and table scraps I throw out to the wildlife but I seldom get such an excellent close up, although they are around all the time.  Quite brilliant. The Nandina domestica 'Harbor dwarf' really is a dwarf form of the plant. It has never flowered or fruited here. The common name is 'Heavenly Bamboo'. Several tries at getting this form of Nandina established. Cannot say why. Finally it looks like it will grow. At the base of the Red Cedar tree where we park the vehicles. And, perhaps, more dark will disappear as the last of the chlorophyll leaves.  The amazing form I think is called 'Firepower'.  This bright yellow plant is a deciduous Rhododendron named R. mucronulatum 'Alba'. Could have planted the much commoner purple-pink or orchid colored form. Dislike the color. So I planted this, which will bloom...

Bogturtle's Garden- September 2025

  Fun trying to be quick enough to get this Monarch butterfly with wings open, as it quickly opened and shut them. It spend a lot of time on Buddlea weyerianna 'Honeycomb'. A cultivar originally from Scotland, I think.  The repeat blooming Daylily 'Happy Returns' has never been without a flower for months now. Last year I cut it to the ground, never happy that some brownish leaves always come. Full Sun and sandy, dry soil may cause that. At any rate, the foliage came back beautifully and I did get repeat bloom, but with nonstop flowering, this Summer, I did not cut it back. The center bed in the lawn, where this Daylily blooms, will be trimmed to the ground with a string trimmer, leaving any desired plants, and then I will smother the trimmed back weeds with 3 to 4 inches of fresh wood chips.
