'Bogturtle's Garden= May 1-8, 2026
Plans gone awry, and I will just go with this. I planted, years ago, along the front walk, bulbs of the Spring ephemeral Scilla hispanica, which is similar to the English Blue Bells of their woodlands. That, I think, is S. nonscripta. I planted the three common colors offered. A white, a violet blue and a kind of orchid pink blooming. Now I see only the bluish and pinkisn sort seeded and blooming among the stepping stones of the path. More and more, and while I will weed the path, I will leave these to bloom. Few are still along the left of the path. A group of blue are spreading to the right.
And here, along the front walk, are shown the two different kinds offered to me as Azalea 'Tradition'. A rather doubled. I think the lighter is the more genuine variety.
Extremely high up, now, this is the beautiful Lilac maybe called 'Nazdiah', which translates from Russian as 'Hope'.
Aesculus pavonia, our Southern native 'Red Buckeye',
Not wonderful germination, but some coming on, in my little seed growing box on the potting bench. I have not tried to use a heating cable I know is under the substrate. Kale, Leek, Red Lettuce, and the large seedlings are of the Giant White Japanese 'Daicon' Radish that grew so well last year. Transplanted, yesterday to a bed on the ground and sprayed with deer repellent. When I checked, today, I think the Groundhog ate and uprooted several, already. I have a few I did not plant, and will replace those but the repellent is so obnoxious smelling I am amazed. Don't have the wire up on my main vegetable garden, as I am enlarging it and have taken the old down,
The other Silverbell, growing near where we park. Halesia triptera, I think.
Another photo of the front walk. The native white flowered Dogwood and the Pink, we planted, as well as the 'Celebration' and 'Delaware White'. Before July 4 I must prune the pink Azaleas, so they are a little more uniform in height and must cut out the endlessly annoying Japanese Honeysuckle that is mixed in.
Not showing well, yet, I can see the large, white-flowered Viburnum mariesii, with its tabled branch structure, just in front of the old Pink Dogwood.
One would think I have enough plants, but here's a new one. An African Violet relative called Streptocarpus, of some cultivar. Two inch wide deep violet flowers, and more are, surprising coming on.
Out the front window. The Snake Plants or Sansevaria have been here for two years now. Like sculpture, they seem to hardly need watering. The ideal house plant, if you tend to neglect them.
And the photo below is out the bedroom window. The 'Delaware White' Azaleas were never anticipated to grow so huge, but I don't plan to cut them down yet.
Your azaleas are very pretty.
